Planning a gravel bike route: the complete guide

June 14, 2026 · 6 min read · by VéloCore

Gravel has a challenge of its own: finding the right paths without ending up in a muddy dead end or on a truck-filled road. Here's a simple method to plan an enjoyable gravel ride on the first try — and follow it with confidence on your cockpit.

1. Start from the right route profile

A gravel route isn't drawn like a road ride. In the VéloCore planner, pick the Gravel or Forest & trails profile: the algorithm then favors rideable tracks, paths and greenways over major roads. For a mixed ride, the Touring profile offers a good balance between rolling comfort and quiet roads.

2. Draw, then fine-tune by dragging the line

Drop a start and an end point, let the route calculate, then drag the line to route it through a specific path you know. It's the fastest way to force in a nice singletrack or avoid a section you know is impassable.

Tip: no destination in mind? Use the loop generator — set a distance (say 40 km) and a surface type, and VéloCore draws a real loop back to the start, with no U-turn.

3. Balance the climbing

On gravel, elevation costs more than you'd think: loose surfaces and constant re-accelerations wear the legs down. Watch the total elevation gain shown and, if you're new to the terrain, aim for under 1,000 m over 50 km. Want to climb? The Max climbing profile actively seeks out hills for those who love a challenge.

4. Scout water and resupply

Gravel rides often stray far from shops. Turn on the points of interest on the map to spot fountains, bike cafés and water points along the track, and plan your stops before leaving rather than improvising when you're out of water.

5. Export to GPX and ride

Once the route is set, two options: export it as GPX for your bike computer, or save it to your account — it appears straight in the VéloCore app cockpit with turn-by-turn navigation. One account, web and app in sync.

6. Share the ride

Gravel is even better together. Turn your route into a ride call: invite friends or open the outing to the community, everyone RSVPs, and off you go as a group.
