Cycling in winter: gear and safety
Riding in winter is no punishment. With the right gear and a little planning, cold-weather rides are among the best of the year: crisp air, empty paths, low golden light. Here's how to dress, prep your bike and secure your routes when night falls early and the roads turn cold.
Dress in layers, the basic rule
Cold on the bike is managed in three layers. A technical base layer next to the skin wicks away sweat, a mid layer (light fleece or merino wool) holds the heat, and a windproof, water-repellent jacket blocks the wind and showers. The classic mistake is over-dressing at the start: set off slightly cool, your body warms up fast once you're pedaling. Above all, protect the extremities, which chill first: proper gloves, overshoes, a neck warmer and a thin cap under the helmet.
Adapt tires, lights and visibility
In winter, the road is often wet, greasy or covered in leaves. Drop your tire pressure slightly for better grip, and favor a soft compound a little wider than usual. Visibility becomes crucial as daylight fades: strong front and rear lights are no longer optional, even in broad daylight under a grey sky. Add reflective elements to your ankles and bag, because moving points are spotted from far away.
Protect your bike from salt and damp
Road salt and mud attack the drivetrain. After a wet ride, wipe the chain, re-lube with a wet-conditions product and check your brake pads, which wear faster in the wet. A regular check of pressure and cables prevents nasty surprises at the worst moment. All of VéloCore's features help you keep a clear record of your rides and your gear as the season goes on.
Plan routes suited to the season
In winter, you go shorter and safer. In the VéloCore planner, favor the Safe profile to stay on well-maintained, lit roads, and avoid tracks that turn into mud baths at the first rain. Mind the real hours of daylight: a 30 km loop that's pleasant in summer can finish in the dark in December. Turn on the points of interest to spot a warm café halfway, a welcome break when your fingers freeze.
Ride safely when night falls early
Short days mean more rides at dusk, often solo. Tell someone your route and expected return time, and keep a charged phone warm in an inside pocket, because cold drains batteries. VéloCore's geolocated SOS lets you alert the community and your contacts in case of a fall or breakdown in an isolated area. We explain how it works in our dedicated article on the geolocated SOS.
Save your track and set off with a clear mind
Before you leave, save your route to your account: it appears straight in the app cockpit with turn-by-turn navigation, invaluable when fog cuts visibility. One account, web and app in sync. And if you'd rather have company, turn the outing into a ride call: riding as a group in winter is safer and far more motivating for facing the cold.
